"Optical drives disappearing from Vista based notebook."
Hi
There are thousands of instances on web complaining about disappearing optical drives on Vista.
Removing upper / lower filters is not fixing these problems.
I am seeing following error in my event viewer :
"The device 'HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA Device' (IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-T20L________________NC08____\5&15fb8ba2&0&0.0.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal."

We need a little more information so that we may better assist you.
Did this just start happening recently?
If so, what was changed before this started happening?
Below are a few suggestions that may help resolve your issue.
We suggest you try a system restore.
Please make sure you have all the important information backed up before attempting to do a system restore.
1. Click on Start
2. In the search box right above start type System restore (you do not have to hit enter to get this to appear)
3. In the list above the search box system restore should be at the top click on
System restore
4. This should pop up a System Restore Wizard this will walk you through the steps on how to do a system restore to the best last known point.
Was there an update that was run lately? If so please try and roll back the drivers.
Also, please check for any firmware updates for the drive and re-seat the drive in the laptop, as it could be loose physical connection.
