Numerous Errors After Running System File Checker
After running System File Checker (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833) last night to get Explorer to handle my CD/DVD drive correctly (it would not read a CD software install disc,
but kept ejecting it), I am experiencing numerous frustrating issues that were not present before. To wit:
1. IE would not accept cookies (fixed on reboot)
2. IE wipes out my cookies after every reboot (still an issue).
3. WMP will not recognize my music library (worked fine before).
4. Certain programs that worked fine before now will not run at all, even after a fresh install.
5. My IE favorites was wiped out on the last reboot (but was there prior to that, even after running the fix last night).
6. My Avira Anti-Virus control center will not function, and I get an alert on every bootup about it. The program searches the Internet for a solution but can't find one.
7. Numerous glitches such as Glary Utilities not being able to fix issues because it can't write to its 'index.ini' file (which is present and in the location that it's looking for it, just can't write to it); my scanner software not being able to find a certain
file while I'm using it and giving me an error message, etc. Glary found 192 registry errors, but I'm afraid to 'fix' them (not that I can anyway since Glary can't complete the job anyway).
Something seemed to scramble the location of some of my files and/or screw up my registry.
This is extremely bizarre and troubling. It seems like whenever I fix one issue, two more pop up. I feel like I will be working for days to solve these issues.
I know I could do a system restore, but then I would have the same CD/DVD issue I was having. Please advise.
Thanks,
Chris
Keys to the Problem Numerous Errors After Running System File Checker
There are way too many issues going on with this laptop. It all seemed to start after I ran the System File Checker, and then the Brother scanner install package (including special 64-bit Win7 drivers and install files). Best I can tell, one or both
of those screwed up my registry big time. Easier just to reinstall the original system image. Love it.
